Hello all,
The Portsmouth Bowel Cancer Appeal asked me to write a short introduction about my work in Portsmouth, and I am more than happy to introduce myself to you.
My name is Gijs Stuart, and I currently work as a Clinical Research Fellow at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust under the supervision of Professor Jim Khan. I combine this role with my position as a PhD candidate at the University of Groningen, where I focus on colorectal surgery.
I was drawn to Portsmouth by its strong focus on innovation in colorectal surgery, particularly the advances in robotic surgery, as well as the high-quality scientific work produced by the department. During my fellowship, I aim to contribute to this inspiring research environment by initiating, supporting, and conducting clinical research projects in colorectal surgery, with the goal of improving care for patients with rectal cancer.
My clinical and research work in Portsmouth is closely linked to my PhD project, which focuses on identifying prognostic factors in rectal cancer. Rectal cancer remains a common and complex disease. Although there have been major improvements in diagnosis and treatment in recent years, differences in how patients are diagnosed and treated still exist.
Through my research, I aim to better understand which factors influence both short-term and long-term outcomes after rectal cancer surgery. These include inflammatory blood markers linked to postoperative complications, radiological features that improve tumour staging, and differences in treatment strategies. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to a more consistent and personalised approach to rectal cancer care, ensuring that every patient receives the most appropriate treatment and the best possible outcome.
If we ever see each other in the hospital or around the city, please do feel free to come and say hello. I would really enjoy meeting you.
