Our Fundraising Targets
Portsmouth Bowel Cancer Appeal (PBCA) is a charity that is led by unpaid Trustees and volunteers, all monies raised are channelled into the appeal fund.
Colorectal Cancer is the third most commonplace cancer in the UK, and the numbers are on the rise, early diagnosis and surgery remain key factors in determining its removal and cure, and the incidence of bowel cancer in people born after 1960 has quadrupled over the last few years
There have been significant developments in surgery and perioperative care of these patients, however more research is required into sourcing the causes and progression of this cancer as well as the response to treatment, quality of life and survivorship.
Its our aim to help our patron, Professor Jim Khan, in the following areas:
Pre & Post surgical Support
Support new and existing initiatives in improving the pre and post support surrounding surgery for bowel cancer.
One of our ideas is to to record an informational podcast that patients can listen too after diagnosis in the comfort of their own surroundings. When a patient is informed of the diagnosis a lot of the information is not taken in nor immediately understood.
Training
Support the training of surgeons in robotic techniques and keeping up to date in the latest developments in the field.
For example, we recently provided funding to support attendance of trainee surgeons to the annual robotic surgery congress held at Portsmouth University.
Research
Help Fund state of the art and cutting edge research at Portsmouth in bowel cancer.
More research will lead to safe and successful running of national and international trials, setting up national database for cancer outcomes and rolling out a training program to teach surgeons in the advanced procedures safely.
